Overhead Press

Standing barbell press from shoulders to lockout overhead.

How to do it

  • —Squeeze glutes and brace hard — the press is only as stable as the floor you make.
  • —Move your head back out of the way, then push it 'through the window' at lockout.
  • —Bar path is straight up, not forward.

Common mistakes

  • —Leaning back into a standing incline press.
  • —Pressing around the head instead of moving the head.
  • —Rushing reps — overhead is where bar control disappears first.

Scale it easier

Seated dumbbell press, or halve the load and add reps.

Scale it harder

Strict tempo (3s down), or push press the last set for overload.
